The Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy Trust (BoPSAT)

BoPSAT's aim:

“To provide the opportunity for youth to experience the sport of sailing, irrespective of means or ability and to create pathways and strategies to engage them in the sport for a lifetime”

BoPSAT is the result of a group of enthusiastic sailors and parents, who in 2003, saw the establishment of a professionally structured youth sailing programme, as the most successful course of action, in the promotion of the sport of sailing.

NBSailing’ is defined in the broadest terms and includes dinghies, boards, multi-hulls, keelboats, Blokarts and kites.

Mission Statement - to promote youth sailing.

BoPSAT’s aim is to introduce students at a basic level and encourage them to gain experience in many classes of boats, finally graduating as competent sailors, with the ability to participate at club, National and International level.

To date, we have introduced thousands of students to the sport of sailing and supported several who have gone on to become National Champions, including seven who have gone on to become World Champions, including Peter Burling, who represented New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics.

BoPSAT was established as a Charitable Trust in April 2004, with the following 7 objectives:

1. to increase participation in the sport of sailing

2. to make sailing more accessible to a larger cross-section of the community

3. to develop and deliver sailing experience days and Learn To Sail programmes, utilizing qualified instructors, teaching to recognized National Standards

4. to create sailing opportunities for other disabled

5. to assist sailors to reach their full potential

6. to assist sailors in attending National & International Competitions

7. to create the opportunity for local youth to develop life skills

BoPSAT is based at the Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club, where a partnership with Steve’s Marine Supplies, has seen thousands of Bay of Plenty students experience 'Fun Sail' days, 'Learn to Sail' and 'Learn to Windsurf' courses.

The development of the Bay of Plenty Sailing Centre, with fellow youth groups; the Sea Scouts, Mariners and Sea Cadets, provides BoPSAT with the opportunity to build its own storage and office facility.

BoPSAT's fleet of boats current comprises of; 17 Optimist, 6 Topaz, 7 International 420 Class boats and 6 Bic Techno One Design windsurfers.  A Sailability programme (sailing for the disabled) is planned for the 2012/12 season.  We plan to continually increasing the fleet of dinghies and boards, to meet the ever growing demand of youth wishing to enjoy our sport.

BoPSAT has partnered with the TYPBC to form the ‘Sea School’.  When we established the Trust back in 2004, we identified as one of our main objectives as, ‘to increase the knowledge of sailing within the population of the Bay of Plenty’. This has certainly been achieved in respect of the practical side of sailing with amazing results.

The partnership with the Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club (TYPBC) over the last seven years has seen the club produce approximately, at least one World Champion per year.  BoPSAT’s recent partnership with the TYPBC to form the ‘Sea School’, will see this success extend to the theoretical side of the sport, giving greater depth of understanding and safety to all those who attend.  Youth students can also benefit by sitting NCEA credits, through Elements Watersports.
